Low carbon design and delivery

As project managers under Her Majesty's Courts Service (HMCS) Framework Contract, Mouchel has helped deliver one of the greenest law courts in the UK.

Working closely with HMCS to evaluate design choices against the whole-life cost model for the project, Mouchel's design team was able to incorporate many carbon saving features in the design and ensure lower ongoing building maintenance and operational costs. Including features such as solar hot water collectors, low water use appliances, maximum natural lighting, highly-efficient building services, enhanced thermal values and an innovative concrete frame - the project received an 'Excellent' rating under BREEAM.

The EnterpriseMouchel contract with Transport for London (TfL) covers routine maintenance, street lighting and winter maintenance of all TfL routes in south London.

A commitment by all partners to reduce carbon emissions from operations was an important part of the contract, with all maintenance vehicles required to meet the higher Euro 4 and Euro 5 emissions standards - helping to limit greenhouse gases per kilometer driven. In addition to this, EnterpriseMouchel has introduced a number of fully electric, zero emission 'Modec' transit-style vehicles, cutting around 25 tonnes of carbon emissions from the contract (equivalent to 10,000 litres of fuel) and saving more than £12,000. Since works began in 2007, EnterpriseMouchel has delivered low-carbon training to more than 300 staff, embedding an environmental culture throughout the supply chain, and during the year became the first principal highways contractor to be awarded the Carbon Trust Standard Bearer.
