Traffic signals
Traffic signals are key tools in the provision of a highway authority's objectives. They regulate the flow of traffic and improve road safety. They can be used to manage vehicular traffic, provide crossing facilities for pedestrians and cyclists and provide priority to public transport and emergency vehicles.
We provide consultancy and advice on the design, procurement, commissioning, operation and maintenance of traffic signals and traffic control systems, for motorways and all-purpose roads.
Our staff have extensive experience of how both motorway signalling and traffic signals at road intersections can be used to achieve an authority's traffic management objectives. We provide a ‘total service’ for such systems and can link these to other Intelligent Transport systems (ITS).
We are able to provide clients with a service covering all the activities required during the life of a traffic signal installation. We are also very aware of how best to combine traffic signals with other ITS systems to achieve the authority's objectives.
Specialist traffic modelling skills can be provided at the design or review stages of projects. Staff have project managed the Department of Transport's Urban Traffic Management and Control (UTMC) research programme and have implemented UTMC-compliant systems in several authorities.
