Overview
Following in the footsteps of a master is always a daunting challenge. When asked to replace the mobile classrooms with new single and two-storey buildings providing teaching spaces for Maths, English and Science, Mouchel Parkman's design team were conscious the new structures had to be built alongside the original, Grade 1-listed building, designed by one of the founders of the Bauhaus Movement, Walter Gropius.
The new facilities, which offer twenty new classrooms and three laboratories, include an atrium that offers an open and cheerful space for lunch breaks, informal classes, and a tuck shop for hungry students.
The atrium’s first floor offers a space for presentations and performances, and the whole acts as a conservatory with a passive solar design.
