Increasing design capacity

When Wessex Water needed to increase its design capacity to deal with the volume of wastewater network improvements in its 2010–15 programme they looked for a committed partner who could be trusted to work in close collaboration with their engineering contractors.

We built a strong, multidisciplinary design team, co-located with the client’s engineers. We supported our designers with experienced network modellers who assessed each scheme in the context of the wider catchment, ensuring that the solution was optimised for cost, performance and location.

A key challenge was to deliver a large programme of improvements to sewer overflows to a timetable agreed with the Environment Agency. Many of the schemes needed to be constructed in confined, built up areas. This required additional care to ensure minimal disruption to the public.

Critical to the success of our approach was close collaboration with other utilities and local authorities to ensure that a fully functional solution could be delivered without detriment to other stakeholders. Meanwhile, early engagement with the construction team ensured that safety and constructability were a fundamental part of every design.

Mouchel’s design team in Wessex ensured that the client’s commitments to its customers, regulators and other stakeholders were successfully delivered. This has included the successful delivery of more than 150 sewerage improvement projects with an exemplary safety record, achieving all regulatory deadlines and high levels of client satisfaction and design quality standards.

‘9/10 for overall satisfaction with the service provided by Mouchel.’
