Sailsbury Row award presentation

Reclaiming the Streets Salisbury Row

Mouchel has won several prestigious awards after turning a notorious 'rat run' near the Elephant and Castle, Southwark, London, into greener and safer streets and spaces for the local community.

The 'Reclaiming the Streets Salisbury Row' project is:

  • winner of the London Transport Award, Excellence in Walking & Public Realm;

  • winner of the LGN Street Design Award 2011, Community-led design;

  • winner of a 'Silver' Green Apple Award for the Built Environment and Architectural Heritage; and

  • highly commended for the CIHT Streets Award 2011.

The regeneration project included more than 70 new trees, 3,600 new plants, 7,500 bulbs, a new 'civic' zone for residents, some one-way working streets and street closures as well as a 20 mph speed limit throughout the area.

The £1.9m project was funded jointly by TfL and Southwark Council (which contributed £160,000) and has resulted in a 71% reduction in traffic and 83% increase in pedestrian use.

The project's urban design lead Ludovic Pittie said, 'We are proud to be part of this successful partnership with Southwark Council and the community, which has delivered an integrated environment, where car and community co-exist. It has been a pleasure to work with the local people, who were committed to the transformation of the streets and spaces that are now so well used.'
